Canadians talk funny

When you're watching a hockey game next time, notice this pattern:

"The skates of Joe Blow" or "The stick of John Doe" instead of "Joe Blow's skates" or "John Doe's stick" (the way that an American commentator would say it)

I don't know why they say it this way; it's correct, just odd.

Thanks, Edmonton!

Edmonton shows some pizzaz by giving Jimmy Howard, the new backup goalie for the Wings, a ride in a police SUV to Rexall Place for the game on Thurs nite.

Edmonton gets it! Detroit gets it!

How are things in North Korea?

Not so good, especially for the military. This does not bode well for Kim Jong-Il...

Round 2....FIGHT!

Round 1 of the 50th district special election (for the seat vacated by "Duke" Cunningham after being convicted on bribery and whatnot) is over. Round 2 is on....

I just saw an ad attacking Francine Busby, one of the candidates. The very next ad was an ad attacking the attack ad and Ms. Busby defending herself.

GM builds crappy cars

You'd think that if you were building a $75,000 sports car, a car that's the marquee nameplate for your whole company, you'd bother with just a LITTLE bit of quality control. But, since it's GM, you'd be wrong. Apparently, the C6 Corvette (2005/2006) has an issue with the ROOF FLYING OFF. Story here, down near the bottom. The rest of the article is amusing about GM's tailspin, too.

Iraqi Insurgents and phones

An Iraqi insurgent makes a call and the Americans are more than happy to answer!

Oil/Gas crisis

So, everyone bleats about how bad gas prices are and how low the MPG is on cars. I have an older post somewhere about diesel E350 Benzs that get great mileage. Now, Jaguar has an XJ diesel that gets 50mpg. I'd link the story, but it requires registration, so I did the heavy lifting for you:
Jaguar XJ TDVi saloon has travelled 1,000 miles, from Land's End to John O'Groats, and then back to the Midlands, on a single tank of diesel.

The vehicle was a totally standard car, fitted with sat-nav, CD autochanger and rear DVD player screens. Powered by its twin-turbo 2.7 litre diesel, the aluminium-body XJ averaged 53.5mpg on the voyage.

Geoff Cousins, MD of Jaguar UK, said: "We were always optimistic that the XJ Diesel could do this, but the figures were beyond our best expectations. They show that the XJ diesel is a truly economical luxury car...and proves that the XJ really is one of the most environmentally friendly cars in its class."

I should note that BMW's 330d gets about 45MPG, top end of 145 and does a sub 7-second 0-60, so a diesel doesn't have to be a slow car. With a stick shift, a Diesel VW Golf 42/49 MPG (auto gets 34/45). Etc. etc.

Islam, the religion of peace??

We have this story about Muslims whining about the perception of Islam in the US.

The very same day, I find this story.

Once...twice...3 times a loser

This guy is a 3-time loser and he's not even out of his parent's basement yet:
1: He attends U-M Dearborn
2: He skipped his SECOND day of jury duty on a trial. Not his first.
3: He had mommy come down and help get him out of the jam.

What a loser

This time, it's WAR!!!!!

As if the Michigan legislature doesn't have enough to do, they're now embroiled in a very bitter fight about the state bird. You see, the law that was passed in 1931 making the robin the state bird expired in 1933. So, now, the legislators are girding their loins for what will be a nasty fight.

More UN Hate

Hate the UN yet? Ok...how about this gem that Iran is now on the UN Nuclear Disarmament Committee.

1984....

When Orwell wrote 1984, many people thought he was talking about the US. He was actually talking about the U.K. This website with it's creepy bureaucratic speak shows Orwell was right. (along with a bunch of other stuff that's going on in the U.K.)

Patience with Islam

A few bloggers losing patience with "moderate" Muslims (and Islam in general) is hardly a trend, but it's interesting to note.
Armed and Dangerous
Black Five

And, for fun, I came up with a list of countries where moderate Muslims would be free to speak up (I listed it in the comments of one of the entries)

  • USA
  • Canada
  • None of Europe can qualify

Pretty short list, eh?
Update
A commenter on Blackfive said this about my list, causing me to strike Canada from my list. At least in the US, it takes a civil suit to shut someone up, the force of "hate crime" laws aren't behind it.
Actually, in Canada, they are passing sharia type laws and including Islam in hate crime laws so that people cannot criticize Islam without it being considered a hate crime. So basically, the only place that "Moderate Muslims" can speak up without threats on their life is the USA. And even then, the terrorist-supporting C.A.I.R. will be quick to denounce and file lawsuits against anyone trying to criticize Islam.

Who was behind the pro-illegal immigration rallies?

Why, the Commies of course. No, really!

Now, act surprised.

American Taliban Updates

American Taliban in Georgia reads a few pages of Harry Potter, decides it needs to be removed from the library

Goin to a Padres Game

The wife and I are headed to Petco Park on the 22nd to see the Mets play the Padres. Our seats are here.

I haven't been to Petco for anything yet, so I'm looking forward to it. I'm not looking forward to figuring out how to get down there, if/how to park, bla bla.

TSA Watchlist

The TSA watch list is doing a bang-up job of keeping the bad guys off of airplanes. Like USMC Reserve SSG Daniel Brown.

It's good to see that dudes with boring, common names are getting stopped. Especially when they're STILL IN UNIFORM.

Is our children learning?

Not with idiots like this teaching them English. Nevermind what he said, etc. It's how poorly written it is that makes me worried that he's an ESL teacher.

Great Britain?

Yeah, that's where the United Kindgom is now. It ain't Britain anymore and sure as hell ain't great. This will tell you all you need to know about the sad state of "justice" in the UK.

(And don't forget that if you defend yourself against a mugger or other bandit by punching their lights out, you are the criminal!)

Japanese Wackiness

I've had a theory for a while that most Japanese festivals involve carrying something heavy. This is no exception. However, the "something" is a bit more unusual. It's NOT SAFE FOR WORK.
