Canadians talk funny

When you're watching a hockey game next time, notice this pattern:

"The skates of Joe Blow" or "The stick of John Doe" instead of "Joe Blow's skates" or "John Doe's stick" (the way that an American commentator would say it)

I don't know why they say it this way; it's correct, just odd.

Canadians (and Brits) also "go to hospital" - no "the". In fact quite often the "the" gets dropped. Wonder why?
