You can do it vicariously, through the 100 year old comic of Everett True.

The Detroit Historical Museum
Virginia Postrel, author of The Substance of Style and The Future and Its Enemies (both of which I've read and loved) wrote this piece on the Detroit Historical Museum. She was not impressed.

Modern Jazz Quartet
Picked up MJQ's "Sheriff". Grooving to it now. I really really like these guys, but holy shit, I forgot how good they were.

Power out at the condo
Got home from work around 4pm yesterday and the entrance gate to my complex was stuck 1/2 way open (and it wasn't moving). However, the exit gate was working OK, so I went in that way. I parked and told the manager about the gate being stuck open and she mentioned that there was a power problem (the lights were off in the office). I got to my condo and my living room lamp, a flourescent light, was on OK, but the clock on my stereo was just barely visible. The bulb in the refrigerator was barely lit, too. My computer was making funny noises, so I shut it off. I called SDGE and they said that the power would be back on at 6pm. So, I waited, took a nap, and at 6pm the power wasn't back on - in fact, it was totally out now. Called SDGE and they said 9pm. I heard that the gates were stuck closed, so I knew I wasn't going to Krav Maga class. At 7:30, I walked around, noticed that the gates were open and went out for dinner (no opening the fridge or cooking!), had a coffee at Starbucks and got back around 9. Called SDGE since the power was STILL out, they said midnight for power being back on. The complex was completely dark now, as you can imagine. Around 11pm, I called SDGE again, this time they said 2AM! I walked around the complex a bit and around 1AM the power came back on. My computer is fine, nothing appears to be fried.
The problem with the power appeared to be with the underground cable that feeds our complex - apparently it went bad somehow, so SDGE had to dig it up, replace it, etc.

Quake in Japan
This earthquake hit about 120mi away from Misawa. It was a big one, 7.2, and they felt it in Tokyo, so they almost assuredly felt it in Misawa.

Shooting near my condo
This story tells of the shooting of 2 people at a swapmeet/fleamarket/etc that is just a few min walk from the complex.

James Bond
One of the things that makes (made?) the James Bond pictures so popular were the exotic locations. For example, in "You Only Live Twice," 007 is in Tokyo and meets a contact at a sumo tournament at the Kokugikan (the sumo arena). It's kind of cool to think that I've actually visited some of these exotic locations as James Bond!
American Taliban and those damn gays
It appears that Focus on the Family thinks that 6 year olds are adept at determining someone else's sexual orientation.
A susceptibility to be bullied by other boys, who may tease them unmercifully and call them queer, fag and gay.
John Stossel just did a bit where he tested people's "gaydar", turns out most people are just barely better than 50/50 at this.

Tomorrow is Hiroshima Day
60 years ago (tomorrow), we dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. I've made a few entries on this previously. Here are 2 articles on this, one from the weenie, left-winger LA Times and the other from the conservative/right wing National Review.
Guess which one I agree with...
