This NY Times article on Dubai is great and I can totally see how the Dubai I saw 14 years ago is like this now.

What a fascinating article. I recall you saying that Dubai was quite an oasis in the Gulf. I can see where it would be hard for someone who has been raised in a very strict, limited society to go to the freedom of Dubai. Of course the same thing happens here in the US.
To my way of thinking, it is very nice seeing a Middle Eastern country where such freedom seems to co-exist with Islam. A rarity.
